Jumbled Notes

My days are getting all jumbled. Better record something so I have some semblance of order. Or not. Since we last met... hooked up with Mew and clan, Sonic and K, and in-laws, friends, etc. in Port Angeles. Mew and Merry had a small wedding out in the beautiful forest they have in that part of the country. It was a simple but elegant ceremony.

Was great catching up with the NW crew. We didn't want to get in their way too long though, so headed out Thursday. Before that we got a tour of some of the neighboring towns. One, Port Townsend, Mew termed "mini Boulder." Interesting little villa. We went out to a huge bunker that once housed some incredible artillery. Two giant cannons that could shoot 8 miles, weighed 300 tons each and took 50+ men to man. Unfortunately the guns had been removed, but we got to play around in the bunkers. All sorts of dark and twisty passages. They said they fired one of the cannons once before they removed them, it broke windows all over town and they got a call from Canada telling them to cut it out. The original plan was for the bunkers to defend against the invasion of the Japanese along the NW coast in WWII. I guess it worked, I never heard about any successful landings.

Man, Washingtoners do take their coffee seriously. There are little stands all over the place with some interesting diversification. Espresso and Gourmet Hot Dogs, Espresso and Oysters, Espresso and foot massage?!. OK, I made that last one up. Probably.

The night before we left we pitched our tent next to Sonic's. It was our first tent adventure in many years; I about barfed. Nice spot though, just off the beach. Saw eagle tracks in the sand the next morning and Sonic, K, R and I tracked it down to a tree (with some help from the campground host pointing us to the right island.) They make interesting tracks. Pretty much a straight line, and they hop. Those suckers are really big too. Merry said when she had baby chickens they'd bring their young eagle fledglings(?) around to train on them. I was sore in all sorts of interesting places after the tent resort. Sleeping on those pads that are 3 inches wide is a little challenging, so to prepare for our next tent outing in the redwoods, R and I went by Sports Authority and picked up a nice cushy queen size inflatable mattress. Since we're car camping we don't have to worry about weight.

So we haven't made it very far. Spent Thursday night in Oregon and here we are tonight, still in Oregon next to the "wild coast." Pretty awesome seaside. Tomorrow we plan to camp in the redwoods, then see Mount Shasta. I think I've omitted a whole bunch of stuff, but I'll try to fill in the gaps and put up a picture album once we're back.
