Total Eclipse of the Moon

Image
My time was all screwed up anyway, after the weekend, so I staggered outside at 4:00 in the morning to witness this. Made me curious about what the ancients thought of such a strange phenomenon. In China, they apparently believed a dragon ate it and flooded it with blood before ingesting it. How it came back was somewhat of a mystery though. The Greeks were spoil sports, and figured it was because the earth was blocking the sun and the nature of shadow proved the earth was round. Columbus apparently used the knowledge of a pending lunar eclipse to his advantage. Stranded on Jamaica for over a year, the natives got tired of feeding him and his crew. He knew a lunar eclipse would occur February 29, 1504 and told the natives their gods were mad at them for their stinginess and would cause the moon to disappear. Suitably freaked out, the natives begged Columbus to return it. Which he finally relented too, upon which the viddles returned as well. Stolen from one of Bright-eye's shots.

Musical Escapades and Future Schemes

Ah. Just got back from another musical adventure. This time it was a couple of Nepalese performers playing Tibetan Singing Bowls in a planetarium. First off, if you've never been to a planetarium, put that on your todo list, ok?! We walked into the domed auditorium, it was dark, but the dome was lit with a red glow and already you felt like you had stepped outside of space and time. The seats were like movie seats, but tilted further back. After a brief introduction the action started, the dome darkened and you were staring up at a very realistic projection of the starry sky as the Himalayan instruments started weaving sonic landscapes, washing your body and mind with subtle vibrations. The sky changed slowly, outlines of mythological forms traced their outline in the stars, shooting stars, fountains of light streams followed and a hologram of the earth floated by as if you were a spectator somewhere out in space. Quite a surreal experience. The last time memories I had of the plan

What happens when the solution is part of the problem?

Seems to be happening a lot these days, but this one is just bizarre. The idea that sunscreen prevents cancer is a myth Some statements made in the article: The scientific evidence, however, shows quite clearly that sunscreen actually promotes cancer by blocking the body's absorption of ultraviolet radiation, which produces vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D, as recent studies have shown, prevents up to 77 of ALL cancers in women (breast cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, brain tumors, multiple myeloma... you name it). Meanwhile, the toxic chemical ingredients used in most sunscreen products are actually carcinogenic and have never been safety tested or safety approved by the FDA Proponents say sunscreen prevents sunburn, but in fact, the real cause of sunburn is not merely UV exposure: It is a lack of antioxidant nutrition . Sunburn is actually caused by nutritional deficiencies that leave the skin vulnerable to DNA mutations from radiation ... if you boost your

Roaring Twenties

My ride. Had to give it back. Got some strange looks though, stuck in rush hour traffic through the metropolis on the way back home ---inching along down the sonic isles of urban rap and beamers with my windows down, shades on and Beatles CD cranked way up playing "I am the Walrus. Ku Ku Kachoo. Choo Ka Choo Ka Choo Ka Choo Ka." So, tomorrow Stardust with Bright-eyes, then Saturday up 14,000ft plus change with Bright-eyes, Sonic and Kai to play with mountain goatlings .

Trespassing

I'm in a hotel. I drove here with a rented car, that looks like a car from an old get-away chase game one of us had long ago. Bright-eyes had to take a picture of it before I left, it was so odd. Its license plates say Oklahoma. Maybe I will get a copy from her and post it someday. Every evening, since my arrival, an angry thunderstorm sweeps the sky, throws bolts of lightning and growls for a couple of hours while it dumps sheets of water. Late tonight, when it was not raining, I took a short walkabout and came upon a curious sign. Drawn by a rushing sound, I discovered a fence where a parking lot ended, about 20 yards from the freeway. Between fence and freeway runs a drainage ditch, transformed into a stream by rain. Wired several places on the fence, guarding the ditch and claiming the 20 yard strip to the freeway, was a sign: No Trespassing. This is a U.S. Air Force Installation. Anyone caught trespassing with be detained and searched.

Daily Literature

Good reading in small doses . They have a cool idea; for people who use email or rss as part of their daily contact with world and work, this place lets you choose a book from a pretty good selection of classics. Then they deliver it to you in 5 minutes bites each day. You can opt to read more, if you have the time at the moment, but this makes reading good literature a part of the daily routine, sandwiched innocuously between sundry tasks. So I picked the classic "How to Live 24 hours a Day" as my first trial :-)
